About
Hi there! Welcome to West Coast Lino. Inspired by west coast living, you can enjoy one-of-a kind original art. Our prints are handcrafted, and reflect our interests in landmarks, plants, and animals.
The Process
digitally. Next, it is transferred to the linoleum block by placing the
design face down on the linoleum and using a pencil or pen to trace over
the lines. This will transfer the design onto the linoleum. Once
transferred, you are ready to carve. Using linocut carving tools, you
carve away the areas of the linoleum that you don’t want to print. This
will leave behind the areas that you want to be printed. Next, you ink
the linoleum. Ink is rolled onto a smooth, flat surface, such as a piece
of glass, using a brayer until the ink is evenly distributed. Then,
roll the ink onto the linoleum block, making sure all of the raised
areas are covered. Finally, the last step is printing. A piece of paper
will be placed on top of the inked block. A baren or press is used to
apply pressure to the back of the paper. This will transfer the ink from
the linoleum block onto the paper. After printing, carefully lift the paper to reveal your printed linocut design.
Why are linocut prints one of a kind? Because they are made by hand, each print is unique. The process of inking and printing the linoleum block is done manually, and even with the same design, there will be slight variations in each print. This is especially true when printing with multiple colors or layers, as it is difficult to achieve exact registration and alignment. Additionally, the linoleum block can be altered or destroyed during the carving process, so each print run is essentially a limited edition. All of these factors make linocut prints highly collectible and desirable for art enthusiasts.
